A SUPA June.

Training of the schools and university polo teams moves onto grass this month. The teams that are members of the Schools and Universities Polo Association (SUPA) need to prepare and put in the practice to be ready for a busy calendar of competitions that are scheduled for June.

The teams from Wellington College have two months of intensive coaching from the Ryan Pemble Polo Academy in preparation for the summer events. They will need to be fully up to speed by May 25 when the Wellington Mixed-U18A team play a friendly match against Eton College Boys-U18A.

The Mixed-U18A and B teams had success last season in their friendly matches, both teams winning 5 out of 5 matches when they played teams from Rugby, Harrow, Eton, Marlborough, Stowe and Millfield. The Girls-U18B team won their category in the SUPA Ladies Arena National Championships earlier this year, which follows the success at the event the previous year when the Wellington B team won the Lower Intermediate category.

The first tournament in June is the National Universities Jubilee Summer Championships. The event runs from the 14 to 16 June at Offchurch Bury Polo Club, near Royal Leamington Spa, and includes a SUPA Jubilee International Test Match which this year will be against India. An international against India was last held in 2009 and underscores the long term relationship organized by Mayo College, India and SUPA.

The team from India will also be competing in Chantilly, across the weekend 17 and 18 June, when SUPA France hosts SUPA UK and India in a Tri-Nations Test Match.

Back in the UK on Saturday 17 June, Kirtlington Polo Club will be hosting the Senior Schools National Summer Tournament. The matches run throughout the afternoon with the event scheduled to conclude by 7pm. There are five categories: Open, Intermediate, Novice, Beginner & Combined teams.

The final event for June is the Ladies Schools National Championships to be held on Sunday 25 June. The event is open to all teams of lady players and individuals. Following the success of the Girls-U18B team at the Arena Nationals it seems likely that Wellington will be keen to submit a team. The location for this event will be confirmed nearer the time on https://www.supa.org.uk
