Polo is a physical and demanding sport for both horse and player. Polo ponies are put through a regime of exercise and schooling to bring them to a level of fitness and stamina for competing in a polo match. The polo player should have a similar approach to fitness and exercise.
It is important to maintain a good level of fitness even if you take a break from polo during the winter. Maintain your core strength and work on aerobic exercises; maybe go running, cycling or swimming. It may seem a while until the start of the summer, but as all athletes will know, every successful season begins with strong pre-season training.
Now is the time to increase your exercise regime, maybe with a bit more time spent in the gym, or a few extra laps of the running track. As well as going to the gym Ryan incorporates yoga and benching into his training routine.
