Action in Argentina.
The first of the Argentine Triple Crown series of tournaments is underway. The high goal teams are competing in the Tortugas Open, which is followed by the Hurlingham Open and culminates in the Argentine Open.
This year La Dolfina have a team handicap of 40 goals. Cambiaso, Stirling, MacDonough and Nero form the impressive line up. They took part in the third match of the series and soundly beat a 31 goal team, La Irenita, with a score of 20 goals to 6. No doubt they will be the main talking point of the competition, with high expectations that they will be in the final.
However the fourth game of the tournament showed this isn’t necessarily a one horse race. Ellerstina, with the gun power of Facundo, Nico, Pablo and Polito Pieres (forming a 39-goal team) played Cria Yatay and gave them a pounding. Cria Yatay came out licking their wounds after a 15-3 defeat.
Both those matches formed day two of the tournament. The first day had seen the tournament opened with a match between La Aguada and La Irenita. Both teams were matched with 31-goal handicaps, so on paper it could’ve gone either way. But on the field La Aguada out performed La Irenita, and in the last two chukkas opened up a large lead, coming away with a convincing 17-8 victory.
The other game of the opening day was between Alegria and Cria Yatay. Alegria are a 35-goal handicap team and should’ve done better against a 31-goal team. The 16-13 score line almost flattered them as Cria Yatay squandered a score of chances in the opening two chukkas which could’ve led to quite a different result. Alegria will need to tighten their game up.
Cria Yatay and La Irenita have now been knocked out of the tournament. Games to come are: La Dolfina vs La Aguada (30/09), Ellerstina vs Alegria (01/10), with the final between the two winners on 7 October.
